Adopt: Take a Chance and Learn to Dance

People often come to the shelter where I volunteer looking for a specific dog  - a dog like the one they grew up with, a dog exactly like their beloved companion that recently passed away.

Sometimes they make a connection with a dog, perhaps only eye contact through the kennel door, but the dog is not what they are looking for.  They leave the dog behind. Wrong color, wrong size, wrong age.

Stop it.  The dogs in shelter need homes, and you need a companion.  Take a chance.  If you lost a sweet and mellow Golden Retriever, try a little black Chihuahua or a scruffy mutt.  Now and then one of the small dogs will stand on its hind legs and do a little dance.  Either begging for food, or begging for attention, does it really matter?  Some of the overlooked shelter dogs can dance, and you can too.

Adopt a Shelter Dog.

And Dance.

Top Ten Reasons Dogs Are Better Dancers Than Cats

A new Top Ten List is posted every Monday.

  1. Dogs are used to shaking their rear ends.
  2. Cats just don't dance.  Period.
  3. Dogs will do just about anything for a treat.
  4. Dogs will do just about anything.  Period.
  5. Dogs have better rhythm (actually, cats have none).
  6. Dogs go for car rides and listen to the radio, hence develop a groove for funky dance steps.
  7. Dogs will dance with partners, whereas cats are more solitary creatures.
  8. Cats can't watch Dancing with the Stars because they're always on top of the television.
  9. Cats get too distracted by disco balls (think laser lights x 1000)
  10. Cats don't have time to practice as they sleep 23 hours a day.

Top Ten Reasons There Is No Such Thing As An "Easter Kitty"

A new Top Ten list is posted every Monday.

  1. Easter Kitty would eat the Easter grass in the basket and puke all over the candy.
  2. Easter Kitty might deliver Easter candy.  Or he might not.
  3. The Easter chocolate would melt on top of the television set.
  4. Easter Kitty would never don festive Easter garments.
  5. Easter Kitty would feel compelled to play with colorful Easter basket goodies that would then end up under the refrigerator.
  6. Easter Kitty would make mincemeat out of cute little Easter chicks.
  7. Creepy staring Easter Kitty would creep out all the children.
  8. Easter Kitty might choose to stay under the bed all day.
  9. "Easter Kitty" would get confused with less popular "Easter Bitty."
  10. Who says there's not an Easter Kitty?

Lessons From the Land of the Littles

I love watching the Littles when I walk them.  Kumquat's big head bobs up and down as he looks around.  Sneaky Squirrel's tiny face and big brown eyes, ears perked, share so much joy in a simple, everyday walk, and everyday things.  They love to lay in the sun.  They love a tasty biscuit.  A ride in the car.  Joy from the little everyday things. Joy for the Littles.

Yes. the Littles give me so much joy.  They also teach me to take joy in the little things in life, like they do.  And they make me realize how much joy I take from the Littles.

Morning Biscuits

Most mornings, whether weekday or weekend, we have a routine.  And one of the first things I do in the morning is walk to the kitchen so I can feed my motley crew.  The cats, of course, are screaming for food from the moment I open my eyes.  Kumquat the squat doesn't usually wake until the food has been out for a while.  But the very second my foot enters the kitchen, so too does Sneaky Squirrel.  Silently, speedily, stealthily, he appears.  Staring at me with his big brown eyes.  Pleading not for his kibble and canned, but for his beloved morning biscuit.  Oftentimes, he stands on hind legs, as though the world will end unless he is given his treat post-haste.  (Indeed, he acts as though he lives post-apocalypse.)  And then, once his tiny teeth have gripped the biscuit, he runs off to to the cube where he can blissfully savor every crumb away from prying eyes (hello, Kumquat).

Makes me wish there were a morning biscuit for me.
